The other day I was listening to the song “Your Man” by Five for Fighting and there’s a line in that song that goes: “I don’t wanna be the son of a better man, I don’t wanna love you anymore than the best I can, I just wanna be your man” The first part of that line caught me off guard because I’ve never lived my life thinking that I want to be better than my dad... it just sounds arrogant. Later in the song, that line is changed to: “We could have a son who’s a better man, with baby blue eyes, don’t you understand? I just wanna be your man.” When I heard that line, it choked me up because I immediately though of my son Damian (who happens to have beautiful baby blue eyes)... of course I want him to be a better man than me! This all made me think of some advice my dad gave me when I was in my early twenties... he said “Vince, don’t make the same mistakes I did. Learn from my mistakes.” What awesome and humble advice that was! I admire my dad for many things... even his mistakes. His example makes me a better man! My challenge for all of us is to strive to be the “better men” that our dads or other people in our lives want/need us to be. Peace!
